Behind the Nun

From an early age, I've always been interested in the subject of 'street art' if I can call it that. It started with a love of graffiti - I still have my treasured, original copies of 'Subway Art' and 'Spraycan Art 'by Martha Cooper and Henry Chalfant. These two books were hugely influential in my attraction to the power of an underground art scene, even if I didn't really know what that meant at the time.

Fast forward a few years, and I remember getting my first tattoo in Spike's tattoo studio in Wolverhampton, UK. I'm afraid it wasn't that original...a baby devil holding a pitchfork on my right shoulder - long since covered I may add...

I gained a few more tattoos over the years - the usual tribal band and symbols that everyone seemed to get in my generation. I've never regretted a single tattoo, although I have covered some as they don't necessarily 'fit' my overall aesthetic in later life.

Moving to New Zealand from the UK in 2013 really accelerated my tattoo collection, and I've been incredibly fortunate to have been tattooed by some amazing artists from NZ and all around the world. Each one is a special memory, forever immortalised in time.

Tattooed Nun

So, where did 'Tattooed Nun' come from? Well, that's a surprisingly simple one...my last name is 'Nunn' and I'm tattooed - hence the name 'Tattooed Nun'. As well as being convenient from my personal perspective 😃, it also symbolises exactly what I wanted to create from a brand - the ultimate contradiction, clean meets chaotic, saint meets sinner, art meets attitude.

Tattooed Nun is NOT fast fashion.

It IS intentional, considered and rooted in craft.

We design for the people who don't want to blend in.

For the ones who see beauty in contrast.

This is clothing with character.

This is art you can wear.

This is Tattooed Nun, I hope you enjoy our designs.
